A Parent's Mini Guide to Connection
What is connection?
Connection is closeness — physical and emotional.
For children, connection happens best through play. High energy, rough play where they have power and win. Play where you are interested in their interests.
“I see you” is so important in relationships.
Emotional closeness comes from empathy.
Empathy is a connection of emotions at the heart. I see what you are feeling. I understand.
We will get deeper into empathy tomorrow.
Connection also occurs when we work together to find solutions.
Collaboration is a message of togetherness and empathy. I care about what matters to you. Your wants and needs are important to me.
Three parts of relationship parenting work together to create a wonderful relationship with your kids — or anyone.
Connection can occur proactively or in the moment.
Proactive connection means seeking changes to connect.
We make time for play in the evenings. Bedtime is prime time as sleep is separation and kids need help to calm for sleep. We can also invite them into our routine — cooking and cleaning are more enjoyable together.
Use time and creativity to connect with your child.
In the moment, connection is spontaneous.
Kids often seek our attention and we should respond when possible. We also need to ensure we connect before making demands. If they are focused on any activity, interrupting will cause friction. First, notice them and ask about their activity before giving warning that you have a request.
By seeing your child first, you will be able to collaborate.

This is version 2.0 of this course. To go along with the course, I have started a Facebook group where you can ask all your questions. The lessons will be posted there as well as guides.
I have also created a journal for each week. You can download and print the pdf or make a copy of it in Googledocs to answer. You can share your answers in the comments of each post, or in the Facebook group.
